What This Is and Who It's For

If you are thinking about laser eye surgery, or you already have a date booked, one question is almost always on your mind: what is the recovery actually like? I am Dr. Tamer Salem, consultant ophthalmologist (an eye doctor and surgeon) at Spanish Center Dubai, and I want to walk you through it honestly.

The good news is that for most of my patients, recovery is quicker and gentler than they expect. The first day feels a little strange, and then it gets better fast.

This guide covers the three main laser procedures I perform: LASIK, SMILE, and PRK. I will explain what is normal, what to avoid, and the rare signs that mean you should call me right away. Read it once before your surgery, and keep it handy for the first few weeks after.

Three Procedures, Two Recovery Speeds

Not all laser surgery heals at the same pace, so it helps to know which group yours falls into. LASIK and SMILE: these work under the surface of the cornea (the clear front window of the eye), so the outer layer stays mostly intact. Recovery is fast, often a day or two. PRK: this gently removes the very top layer of the cornea, which then has to grow back over a few days. That makes PRK heal more slowly and feel more tender in the first week. It is an excellent option for certain eyes, but the early recovery asks a bit more patience from you. I will tell you clearly at your assessment which procedure suits your eyes.

Did You Know?

Even after your vision feels perfect, your cornea keeps quietly remodelling and refining itself for up to a year. Most of the visible improvement happens in the first month, but this slow fine-tuning is why I see many patients again at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. Healing is not just an event on surgery day, it is a gentle process that continues long after you have forgotten you ever wore glasses.

Red Flags: When to Call Us Right Away

Almost every recovery is smooth and uneventful. But a few symptoms are NOT part of normal healing, and if you notice any of them, contact me or the clinic straight away, do not wait for your next scheduled visit: - Sudden, sharp eye pain that is clearly worse than mild scratchiness. - A sudden drop or worsening in your vision. - Increasing redness, swelling, or any discharge from the eye. - A feeling that the flap or surface of your eye has moved or shifted, especially after a knock or a rub. These problems are very rare, but they are exactly the situations where seeing us quickly makes all the difference. With prompt care, almost all minor issues resolve completely. If you are ever unsure whether something is normal, call us anyway, I would always rather check.

An Honest Word on Risks and Suitability

I believe in being straight with my patients. Laser eye surgery is safe and highly effective for the right eyes, but it is not right for everyone. Some people are better suited to one procedure than another, and a few are not good candidates at all, for example because of thin corneas, an unstable prescription, dry eyes, or certain health conditions. Like any surgery, it carries small risks, including temporary dryness, glare or halos at night, and rarely the need for an enhancement procedure. The only way to know what is right for you is a proper assessment. That examination, not marketing, is what decides whether and how we proceed.
